Glass Battery

This glass battery has been dated circa 1900. They were used in the time before rural inhabitants had access to power from local electric companies. A farmer would have a half a dozen or more of these connected together and would charge them during the day. Then, in the evening, these could provide electricity for a few lights and perhaps a radio.

The glass cases were common, because the user could easily determine the level of liquid in the batteries, and the glass was quite strong and lighter then metal. The battery is on loan from a Lancaster gentleman.
